At the beginning of each month, your Extra Benefits card will be loaded with funds. Unused funds at the end of each month will expire and won’t carry over to the next month.

Yes. You can order products online, or by phone or mail without using your Extra Benefits card. Your purchases will automatically be deducted from your monthly benefit.
Use your Extra Benefits card for OTC items at selected retail stores or mail order through the Over-the-counter (OTC) and Healthy Foods Product Catalog [PDF]. You can also use it to pay for healthy foods and home utilities, such as electricity, water, natural gas, and waste.

You must activate your card before you can use it for in-store purchases. You can do one of these two ways:

Use the same login information for HMSAExtraBenefits.com and the app. If you don’t have an online account, sign up for one through the app.
Like HMSAExtraBenefits.com, the app lets you check your card balance and order selected wellness items. The app comes in handy when shopping for OTC items at a store. To see if an item is approved for Extra Benefits, just scan the barcode using the app.

If you receive a new Extra Benefits card, cut up the old card and throw it away. It’s no longer active.

Yes. Funds are loaded onto your card at the beginning of every month (for example, Jan. 1, April 1, July 1, Oct. 1) and expire at the end of each month (for example, March 31, June 30, Sept. 30, Dec. 31). Unused funds don’t carry over to the next month.
No. You can’t spend more than your current balance.
For in-store purchases, if the total cost of your purchase exceeds your card’s balance, you’ll need to pay the difference with another form of payment.
If placing an order online, you won’t be able to complete the order. So please look for items that are equal to your card’s balance. If you’ve used all your monthly funds and have a $0 balance, you’ll need to wait until the next month when funds are replenished.

No. You can’t add your own money to your Extra Benefits card.
If you disenroll from your health plan, your benefits will end on the date your disenrollment becomes effective. Your Extra Benefits card won’t work after this date and any funds on the card will expire.

All health products that are available online and in the Over-the-counter (OTC) and Healthy Foods Product Catalog [PDF] are eligible for purchase with Extra Benefits. Certain products may be a benefit of your medical or drug plan and are identified with “◆” symbol in the catalog. Please speak with your doctor before ordering these items. If they’re a benefit of your medical or drug plan, then you’ll need to submit a prescription to your pharmacy to get the items instead of using Extra Benefits. Already at the store? Use the myTotal Benefits app to see what items are approved. Just scan the item’s barcode.

There are three easy ways to order from the catalog:
No. Shipping is free when you order through the catalog.
Catalog orders are usually processed and shipped within 24 hours. If the order is placed on a weekend, it should process and ship on the next business day. Orders take about seven to 10 business days from the shipment date to arrive. For tracking information, go to HMSAExtraBenefits.com.
No. There’s no limit.
We’ll deduct funds from your balance based on the date we get your order. For example, if you mail your order form March 31 and we get it April 5, we’ll deduct the funds from your April balance.
If you’re ordering by mail and want to spend your current balance, be sure to send it well before the end of the month. If it’s getting close to the end of month, you can:
Yes, as long as HMSA has an authorized representative form, power of attorney, or other legal document (e.g., advance health care directive) on file that gives the family member authority to act on your behalf.
No. OTC items are for your use only. Using these funds to order items for anyone other than yourself is prohibited.
