Over-the-Counter Health Products Allowance
As an HMSA Akamai Advantage® individual plan member, you’ll receive $200 every quarter to spend on approved over-the-counter (OTC) health products available at select retail stores or through mail delivery.
At the beginning of each quarter (January, April, July, and October), your Extra Benefits Card will be reloaded with funds. Unused funds at the end of each quarter will expire and won’t carry over to the next quarter.
- If you disenroll from your HMSA Medicare Advantage plan, your OTC health products allowance benefit will automatically end.
- You don’t need to spend your quarterly funds in a single order. You can spend your funds on multiple orders during the quarter.
- Your Extra Benefits Card won’t cover purchases that exceed your benefit balance.
- OTC products are intended only for members to help with a health or medical need. HMSA prohibits the use of this benefit to order items for anyone other than the member.
- Due to the personal nature of these products, returns are not accepted.

- You can’t use a personal credit card or debit card for online or catalog purchases.

- Visit a participating pharmacy or retailer to buy eligible items with your Extra Benefits Card.

- Download the myTotal Benefits app and use the Product Scanner with your mobile device. Scan an item’s barcode to see if it’s eligible for this benefit.
- Use your Extra Benefits Card as you would a debit card. Approved items will be deducted from your card. Any ineligible items or purchases exceeding your available balance must be paid out-of-pocket at the time of purchase.

No. Your Social Security number was not used to open your account.
Yes. You can order products online, or by phone or mail without using your Extra Benefits card. Your purchases will automatically be deducted from your quarterly benefit.

- Mail: Complete and submit the order form that’s in your OTC Health Products Catalog and mail it to the address on the form.

- Oct. 1 to March 31: Daily, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You must activate your card before you can use it for in-store purchases. You can do one of these two ways:
- Call 1-844-210-2175. For TTY, call 711. You’ll be asked for your card number and the card expiration date.
- Log in to HMSAExtraBenefits.com or the myTotal Benefits app. Click My Account. Then select Activate Card from the drop-down menu.

- Go to HMSAExtraBenefits.com and click Register Here on the Member Login screen. You’ll be asked for your:
- HMSA subscriber number (enter the last 13 digits; EX: A000012345678).
- Date of birth (MM/DD/YYYY).
- Email address (optional).
- Phone number (optional; no dashes).
- Create a username and password. Then, log in 24/7 to:
- Check your card balance.
- Get a digital copy of our Health Products Catalog.
- See where you can shop for items.
- Order selected wellness items.
- Track your orders.
- View your order history.
- Manage your Extra Benefits account.

Use the same login information for HMSAExtraBenefits.com and the app. If you don’t have an online account, sign up for one through the app.
Like HMSAExtraBenefits.com, the app lets you check your card balance and order selected wellness items. The app comes in handy when shopping for OTC items at a store. To see if an item is approved for Extra Benefits, just scan the barcode using the app.
If you receive a new Extra Benefits card, cut up the old card and throw it away. It’s no longer active.

Yes. Funds are loaded onto your card at the beginning of every quarter (Jan. 1, April 1, July 1, and Oct. 1) and expire at the end of each quarter (March 31, June 30, Sept. 30, and Dec. 31). Unused funds don’t carry over to the next quarter.
No. You can’t spend more than your current balance.
For in-store purchases, if the total cost of your purchase exceeds your card’s balance, you’ll need to pay the difference with another form of payment.
If placing an order online, you won’t be able to complete the order. so please look for items that are equal to your card’s balance. If you used all your quarterly funds and have a $0 balance, you’ll need to wait until the next quarter when funds are replenished.

No. You can’t add your own money to your Extra Benefits card.
If you disenroll from your health plan, your benefits will end on the date your disenrollment becomes effective. Your Extra Benefits card won’t work after this date and any funds on the card will expire.

- Complete the order form in the catalog and mail it in.

All health products that are available online and in the OTC Health Products catalog [PDF] are eligible for purchase with Extra Benefits. Certain products may be a benefit of your medical or drug plan and are identified with “◆” symbol in the catalog. Please speak with your doctor before ordering these items. If they’re a benefit of your medical or drug plan, then you’ll need to submit a prescription to your pharmacy to get the items instead of using Extra Benefits. Already at the store? Use the myTotal Benefits app to see what items are approved. Just scan the item’s barcode.

There are three easy ways to order from the catalog:
No. Shipping is free when you order through the catalog.
Catalog orders are usually processed and shipped within 24 hours. If the order is placed on a weekend, it should process and ship on the next business day. Orders take about seven to 10 business days from the shipment date to arrive. For tracking information, go to HMSAExtraBenefits.com.
We’ll deduct funds from your balance based on the date we get your order. For example, if you mail your order form March 31 and we get it April 5, we’ll deduct the funds from your 2nd quarter allowance.
If you’re ordering by mail and want to spend your current balance, be sure to send it well before the end of the quarter. If it’s getting close to the end of quarter, you can:
- Order online anytime before midnight on the last day of the quarter.
- Order by phone until 8 p.m. on the last business day of the quarter.
- Shop in person at a participating store anytime before midnight on the last day of the quarter. Remember to check the store’s hours.
Yes, as long as HMSA has an authorized representative form, power of attorney, or other legal document (e.g., advance health care directive) on file that gives the family member authority to act on your behalf.
No. OTC items are for your use only. Using these funds to order items for anyone other than yourself is prohibited.
