HMSA Sexual and Gender Minority Support Program
Last Modified: 4/28/2023 8:29:24 PM
Navigating the health care system can be intimidating and stressful for sexual and gender minorities and people who identify as LGBTQ+. Many LGBTQ+ individuals face social stigma and discrimination and, as a result, may find it challenging to get the care they need to improve their health.
HMSA is dedicated to supporting Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ community. We know that access to gender-affirming care is essential to health and well-being. It’s why we’ve created a team of key employees who have the knowledge, experience, and desire to help you navigate health care services, understand health plan processes, and support you on your journey.
Enrolling in HMSA’s Sexual and Gender Minority Support Program will give you direct access to your own care manager. Based on your individual needs, your care manager can help you with:
- Whole member care management and care coordination.
- Management of preexisting conditions, preventive care, and recommended treatment.
- Referrals to trustworthy resources and services in the community.
- Doctor’s instructions and answers to questions.
- Navigation of your health plan benefits.
- Collaboration with doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, labs, mental health care providers, and specialists.

FAQs
Depending on your plan, HMSA health plan benefits include counseling services, puberty suppression therapy, continuous hormone replacement therapy, gender-affirming presurgery services, and gender-affirming surgeries. To check if a service is a benefit of your plan, see your Guide to Benefits or call us at 808-948-6079 or 1-800-776-4672.
There are several factors that influence eligibility, such as age, diagnoses, medical and mental health conditions, and real-life experiences. Those factors vary depending on the service. To better understand the steps needed to qualify for specific services, talk to your doctor and enroll in HMSA’s Sexual and Gender Minority Support Program.
Once you and your health care provider agree on services that are appropriate for you, your provider can request approval for the services.
The easiest way to find out is to ask your doctor or the facility that’s providing services to you. You can also go to hmsa.com and use Find a Doctor. If they’re in our database, that means they’re a participating provider.

In March 2022, the Hawai’i SGM Workgroup released the third edition of the Hawai’i SGM Services Directory. This is an opt-in directory of organizations, individuals, and health care professionals that offer identity-affirming services for sexual and gender minorities.
