HMSA celebrated 15 years of its Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program

Hawaii high schools and outstanding students received $88,500 from HMSA

The 2020 HMSA Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program celebrated its 15th year of recognizing Hawaii high schools and seniors who excel in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship.

HMSA awarded 15 student scholarships worth $5,000 each. Nine high schools were recognized for achieving the highest program scores in their league (classified by enrollment) in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship. The nine highest-scoring schools received a $1,500 award.

“During these challenging times, it’s important that we support local students in their pursuit of higher education,” said HMSA President and Chief Executive Officer Mark M. Mugiishi, M.D., F.A.C.S. “We honor these amazing students who've shown that hard work and the desire to help others can make a difference in the lives of so many people.”

HMSA has sponsored the Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program in partnership with the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) since 2005 to recognize all-around accomplishments by high schools and reward individual students with scholarships. These are students who understand the importance of balance in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community.

Due to the COVID -19 pandemic, HMSA made the difficult decision to cancel the awards luncheon, previously scheduled for June 13, 2020, for the health and safety of the awardees, participants, and the community.
