Important Updates to ACA Individual Health plans for 2026

Important Reminder:

Federal health coverage rules are evolving rapidly and may change with little notice. To help protect your coverage and prepare for unexpected premium increases, check your account regularly on HealthCare.gov. We’re here to support you and help you stay informed through these changes.

Enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credit Expiration

The temporary Enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credits under the American Rescue Plan are set to expire Dec. 31, 2025. If Congress doesn’t extend the enhanced subsidies, some enrollees may see higher out-of-pocket costs for health coverage, as their portion of the premium will increase. We encourage you to review your plan options during open enrollment and update your income to ensure that you’re receiving the correct amount of financial help.

The Enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credits have helped to lower health plan premiums for millions. If Congress doesn’t extend the credits, they’ll expire at the end of 2025. This could mean higher monthly costs for many enrollees starting in 2026.

Here’s how you can prepare for any changes:

  • Log in to HealthCare.gov to review your current plan and subsidy level.
  • Use the preview tool during Open Enrollment starting Nov. 1 to compare 2026 plans and costs.
  • Report any income or household changes to ensure your eligibility is up to date.
  • Get help from a Navigator or assister to explore other coverage options, including Medicaid or catastrophic plans.
  • Consider budgeting ahead for potential premium increases or switching to a more affordable plan.

Staying informed now can help you avoid coverage gaps or unexpected costs later.

Expanded Access to Catastrophic Health Plans

Catastrophic health plans offer protection from very high medical costs while providing essential health plan benefits and preventive care. These plans are designed for worst-case scenarios, such as serious accidents or illnesses. They have a lower monthly premium but a high deductible. They’re available to people under age 30 or those who have a hardship exemption. Starting November 2025, people who no longer qualify for subsidies due to income will also be eligible for this plan.
