Important updates to ACA Individual health plans for 2027

Important:
  • Federal health coverage rules are evolving rapidly and may change with little notice. To help protect your coverage, check your account regularly on HealthCare.gov. We’re here to support you and help you stay informed through these changes.

Stay Covered Where it Matters Most

Your plan uses a Hawaii-based network to help you get coordinated, high-quality care close to home. Emergency and urgent care services are covered when you travel, but routine and elective services such as follow-up visits and non-emergency procedures generally must be received in Hawaii to be covered. If medically necessary specialty care is not available in Hawaii, out-of-state care may be covered with prior authorization.

Your HMSA Catastrophic plan will switch to the Bronze PPO I plan in 2027

HMSA will no longer offer the Catastrophic plan and will transition your current plan to the Bronze PPO I plan on Jan. 1, 2027. The change is part of our commitment to providing you greater overall value and access to care. The Bronze PPO I plan offers broader coverage, including essential health benefits and enhanced protection from high medical costs. This expanded coverage comes with a higher monthly premium that reflects the plan’s added value and enhanced benefits.

  • You can expect your plan renewal packet in the mail in early November 2026.
  • If you take no action, you’ll be automatically enrolled in the Bronze PPO I on Jan. 1, 2027.
  • You’ll receive a new HMSA membership card in the mail before your new coverage begins.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)

Starting in 2026, all Bronze plans are available on HealthCare.gov will be compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). If you enroll in an eligible high-deductible health plan, such as a Bronze plan, you can contribute to an HSA.
