HMSA plans, including Preferred Provider Plans, and Health Plan Hawaii provide benefit coverage for an annual prostate specific antigen (PSA) test for asymptomatic men are once per calendar year for asymptomatic men age 50 or older.
American Urological Association guidelines for PSA Screening:
- Below age 40: not recommended.
- Ages 40-54 at average risk: not recommended.
- Ages 40-54 at higher risk: individualized decisions based on family history and risk profile.
- Ages 55-69: Providers and patients to discuss and make a decision together. For patients who choose a screening, the AUA recommends a screening interval of two years.
- Age 70 or above: not recommended.
