Retention of original prescriptions may vary between pharmacies. With the progression of technology, pharmacies may rely on a variety of vehicles of recordkeeping. Standardization of this process will deter future audit findings.
HMSA accepts the following as adequate prescription/order documentation for all pharmacies:
- Hard copy prescriptions
- Electronic scans of prescriptions
- Electronic faxes and e- prescriptions
If the printed copy of an electronically scanned image or electronic fax is unclear, the hard-copy prescription may be requested.
