HMSA covers round-trip interisland flights for HMO Commercial members who need medical treatment that is not available through their local health centers but is available on another island, such as Oahu.
Effective December 16, 2019, PCPs or health center physicians should submit a Travel Request Form on the Hawaii Healthcare Information Network (HHIN+) online at https://hhin.hmsa.com for approval prior to the member’s interisland flight. Providers that have submitted a travel request for a patient in the past should see a Travel button on their HHIN+ home page. Providers that do not see the Travel button or that need help signing up for or navigating HHIN+ should contact HMSA Electronic Transaction Services at 808-948-6255 or email ETSOutreach@hmsa.com.
Services rendered to members by in-state nonparticipating providers will need prior approval through an administrative review process, using the Precertification Request Form [PDF].
