Away From Home Care (AFHC) Program

The Away from Home Care (AFHC) program allows access to participating Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMOs outside of the HMO commercial member's home service area. Guest membership and visitor care are described below.

Guest Membership

Guest membership allows a member living away from home for more than 90 days to receive benefits at an affiliated HMO commercial outside the area served by Health Plan Hawaii. Members who may find this program beneficial include long-term travelers, people on an extended work assignment in another city, children away at school and dependent children living away from home in another city. Call an HMSA AFHC coordinator at 948-6466 for questions regarding guest membership.

Visitor Care

Visitors to Hawaii may obtain a guest membership to receive Health Plan Hawaii services while in the islands. Follow these procedures when assisting a visitor with guest membership:

  • Collect a copayment based on Health Plan Hawaii coverage from the visiting HMO member.
  • Render service to the visiting HMO commercial member and submit a claim to:

AFHC

HMSA
P.O. Box 2970
Honolulu, HI 96802

HMSA will reimburse the Health Plan Hawaii provider at 85 percent of eligible charges less the member's copayment. HMSA will then bill the visiting member's HMO. Guest member eligibility will be active until the guest membership is terminated.
