Chiropractic care services involve the diagnosis and treatment of an injury or illness of the back or spine.
A chiropractor is a health care professional who is licensed to perform spinal manipulation and specific adjustment of body structures.
How can I purchase a chiropractic care rider?
Your employer or employee organization may offer chiropractic benefits through HMSA as a separate add-on plan to your medical plan. This add-on coverage is also known as an insurance “rider.”
Chiropractic coverage isn’t available from HMSA if you have individual medical coverage on your own.
HMSA’s medical plans don’t cover services or supplies provided by a chiropractor. Such services and supplies are excluded from coverage under your medical plan.
Standard benefits of a chiropractic care rider
Chiropractic riders are limited to services involving the diagnosis and treatment of an injury or illness of the back or spine that are performed by a properly licensed or certified chiropractor. Your plan is usually limited to specific benefit limits and copayment amounts. For example, some plans offer 12 visits in a calendar year with a $20 copayment due at each visit. Some plans might also encourage members to use chiropractors in the participating provider network by applying a reduced benefit when nonparticipating chiropractors are used.
Benefits vary depending on the unique chiropractic care rider your employer has selected for its employees. Please contact your employer or employee organization to enroll in your chiropractic care rider.
What if I’m not eligible for a chiropractic care rider?
If you don’t have access to a chiropractic care rider, you still have a unique opportunity to obtain reduced or discounted rates for health and wellness products and services. HMSA365 is a program available to all HMSA members for services such as massage therapy, acupuncture, and many other services and products.
